Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art literature or theater. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who was a social sassy and pushed DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay resided in Compton during the majority of her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of the extended family of her father living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news as an elementary school student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home of an individual member of the Jury. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
